Rara Avis– (Latin) n. rare bird; a rare or unique person or thing

In this class you will learn a twist on a classic water color technique to create your own uniquely personal interpretation of a beautiful bird. Painted and stamped on heavy watercolor paper it makes a lovely three dimensional addition to a special card, or you can glaze it and attach a pin back to create a sturdy jewelry pin.

Long Stitch Book

 

Learn how to make your very own Long Stitch Book with folded blank pages; each section sewn together with needle and thread. This binding was used as early as the 18th century in some parts of Europe, and possible earlier. 

 

The cover is cut from a single piece of leather, and signatures are then sewn directly into the spine of the cover through previously pierced holes. This sewing method creates a staggered line pattern visible on the spine.

 

This very flexible and semi-visible spine allows it to open completely flat and makes a wonderful sketchbook or journal. We will add a thin wrap around cord to keep your book closed. This functional and decorative work of art makes a great gift for yourself or for someone who would enjoy filling it!
